Apple Inc. scooped up embedded PowerPC designer PA Semi Inc. for a reported $278 million last week without saying a word to investors or even PA Semi's customers about what it has in mind for the low-power-processor startup.
Everyone in the semiconductor business is wondering what is in the mind of Steve Jobs. There must be motives and big plans after it bites into chips. It will take 18 months (which is a normal CPU development cycle) to see any chips ship inside new Apple products. There is speculation that the chip will be used for embedded processing inside devices such as iPhone or Apple TV. After Apple announcement of PA Semi Inc. bid, one of PA Semi Inc. customer, US Department of Defense may push back on Apple's bid since the acquisition may stop all the lines of their chips to existing customer.
Apple acquired PA Semi Inc. and what is their next move, we'll wait and see
